Liverpool fans react on Twitter to Manquillo signing - The end for Johnson?

Liverpool have completed the signing of Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid, initially on a loan deal.

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of right-back Javier Manquillo on loan from Atletico Madrid.

The defender initially joins on loan but it’s reported that the Reds have the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the deal if Brendan Rodgers likes what he sees from the 20-year-old.

Brendan Rodgers now has three very good full-backs on the right hand side in the form of Glen Johnson, John Flanagan and Manquillo which could prompt Rodgers into reorganising his back four.

With no deal imminent for Sevilla star Alberto Moreno, it’s likely that Jose Enrique or Flanagan could be used on the left at the start of the season with Johnson and Manquillo competing for the right-back slot to begin with.

Should the Reds snap up a first choice left-back then Manquillo will be under extreme pressure from the first match day at the club.

Manquillo will be looking to use his time at Liverpool to revitalise his career after a disappointing campaign last season, which saw him barely feature as Diego Simeone’s side won the La Liga title.

He made just three appearances in the top flight of Spanish football and will be looking to exceed that at Anfield this season.

Brendan Rodgers is well suited to getting the very best out of Manquillo as Flanagan could testify.

Rodgers has an impressive recent track record of working with younger players, with Raheem Sterling another good example of a player in a different position that Rodgers has helped to develop.

Manquillo is well suited to working with a player like Sterling down the right hand side, with his pace and fitness meaning he can attack with Sterling but drop off quickly when the side is under pressure in difficult games against tough opponents.

Here’s what Liverpool fans have made of the signing on Twitter.
