In demand star prefers Manchester United to Barcelona - report

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is said to harbour aspirations to sign for Manchester United.

The debate of the future of in demand Thomas Vermaelen continues, but there is one destination he prefers above any other.

SkySports report that the Belgian defender would prefer a transfer to United ahead of Barcelona, who were said to to have submitted a £10 million offer for his services earlier this week.

"Sky sources have revealed that United are Vermaelen’s preferred destination and the Old Trafford club will have no problem matching or beating Barca’s offer."

Vermaelen is currently the Arsenal captain, but has been out of favour at the club for the past year.

Arsene Wenger said earlier this month that he could not guarantee the defender would stay at the club this summer, with Vermaelen said to want first team football.

Whether he would stand a better chance of that at United or Barcelona is open to debate, and while the La Liga side have Champions League football on offer, the Red Devils have one key advantage.

That comes in the form of United striker Robin van Persie, who was inseparable off the field from Vermaelen while at Arsenal, and combined well with his teammate from set pieces.

The two were spotted on holiday together in the Caribbean in July after the World Cup, adding to speculation that he may be trying to convince his pal to join him at Old Trafford.
