Paddy Crerand has revealed that he believes United will sign another player during this transfer window.
Crerand took to his Twitter account last night giving his views on United's current squad and where he thinks van Gaal should look to strengthen.
United have so far splashed out £60 million on Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw this summer, and Crerand who played for the club between 1963-1971, tweeted that he believes the new manager will continue to spend this transfer window.
All of you asking about transfers; we're going to have to wait for the manager. I believe we'll sign a player— Paddy Crerand (@PatCrerand) August 5, 2014
Louis van Gaal's side have lost an enormous amount of experience in defence with the departures of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra. Shaw, aged 19, is seen as Evra's long term successor but replacements are yet to be found for either Vidic or Ferdinand.
Germany's World Cup hero Mats Hummels has been strongly linked, but Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has repeatedly dismissed speculation that he could leave the club.
United are also rumoured to hold a firm interest in Thomas Vermaelen of Arsenal, but will face competition for his signing from Catalan giants Barcelona.
Like many United supporters, the 75-year-old MUTV commentator believes an experienced central defender is required.
@adamscott88 After loosing experienced defenders I think you need to look to strengthen there. What do you think— Paddy Crerand (@PatCrerand) August 5, 2014
The 1968 European Cup winner went on to add that he's just as 'keen' as all the club's supporters for new signings, but insist that he has every faith that United's Dutch manager will recruit the right players for the squad.
Im as keen as all of you to see signings but the manager will do the right thing. He & his team are so thorough in everything he does.— Paddy Crerand (@PatCrerand) August 5, 2014
