Tottenham Hotspur could be getting closer to the £20 million signing of Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal.
Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly keen to add some quality and experience to the centre of his defence and Musacchio is the man he’s apparently identified to slot into the middle of his back four for next season.
Spurs fans have been given a little hope after a report in Super Deporte has suggested that the defender is being sent to the gym rather than training with his Villarreal teammates in order to prevent an injury, which could cause any deal to fall through.
“Villarreal want to box him up and prevent any injury which may occur – As he did in training on Friday, he was sent to the gym instead of working with the rest of his teammates,” reports SD.
The report would suggest that there are only three obstacles which could stop Spurs from getting their man.
Firstly, the fee, which reports suggest could be anywhere between the £17-20 million mark.
That’s a great deal of cash for Spurs to come up with and while it’s within their capabilities, chairman Daniel Levy is a businessman and will likely try and haggle as cheap a deal as possible.
Secondly, there’s the issue of personal terms for the 23-year-old.
Spurs should be able to offer him a competitive deal against what he’s already earning at the Spanish club, maybe even offering him a pay rise to move to North London.
There’s also the incentive of the city which Spurs can use to their advantage, mixing that in with making him a wealthy young man in one of the best places to live in Europe.
Thirdly, there’s the issue of the medical which is so often a formality in modern day transfers.
However, there are some instances, Loic Remy to Liverpool a good recent example, where the medical can cause a seemingly done deal to fall through at the last moment.
Villarreal are reportedly preparing for his departure, it’s now over to Tottenham to negotiate and get the deal done.
