The build up to the new Premier League season continues to gather pace with transfer rumours flying around and some pre-season results which are difficult to gauge in terms of significance.
Manchester United have just got one over on Liverpool, winning the ICC Cup in the USA but Brendan Rodgers will still be confident of what his side can achieve this coming season.
We’ve decided to cast our minds back to the stories grabbing the headlines on this day last year.
‘United reject fresh Rooney bid’
Manchester United rejected a fresh bid from Chelsea for striker Wayne Rooney.
Rooney was tipped to leave Old Trafford last summer after apparently telling ex-boss Sir Alex Ferguson that he wanted to leave.
However, Rooney stayed put and signed a new contract with United last season.
‘Thousands cheer on Suarez’
Thousands of Liverpool fans attended an open training session at Anfield to cheer on striker Luis Suarez.
Suarez made some aggressive comments about the club and Brendan Rodgers last year, accusing them of breaking promises they made.
It later transpired that the club had ignored bids from Arsenal, which triggered his buy-out clause.
‘Arteta confident over Arsenal’s transfer plans’
Mikel Arteta revealed his confidence in relation to Arsenal’s summer transfer plans.
The experienced midfielder said he was sure that the Gunners would be able to pull off a deal for Liverpool forward Luis Suarez, who they actively tried to buy last summer.
“If the club can target players who will improve the team they are going to be very welcome because that is what we want - a better team, better players to compete and win trophies. The club is working on that. It is in their hands and I am sure they are going to do it,” said the Spaniard.
