Manchester United player ratings v Liverpool: Rooney shines, £30 million signing impressive

Manchester United capped off their impressive American tour with a 3-1 win over Liverpool thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingaard.

David de Gea – 6

The Spaniard did not have too much to do all night, but was solid. Nothing he could do about Steven Gerrard’s penalty.

Chris Smalling – 7

A fantastic block from one Raheem Sterling shot was the highlight of an accomplished performance from the England international.

Phil Jones – 5.5

Gave away the penalty for Liverpool’s first goal, which showed up the erratic nature to his defending at times. He really needs to prove his worth this season and push on.

Jonny Evans – 6

A solid defensively display from Evans, without ever truly being remarkable.

Darren Fletcher – 6

A quiet half from Fletcher, although his usual energy was on display.

Ander Herrera – 6.5

Another positive outing from United’s new recruit. He looks to have the ability to drive the team on from midfield.

Antonio Valencia – 5

Only on the pitch for the opening 10 minutes before an injury forced him off.

Juan Mata – 7

A well taken finish for United’s second in a thoroughly impressive performance from the Spaniard. He is one of the players showing the most improvement under Van Gaal, after the Dutchman has utilised him in his favoured attacking midfield role.

Ashley Young – 7

Another good game from Young on United’s tour. He was a spritely figure throughout the game and continues to impress during Louis van Gaal's first pre-season.

Wayne Rooney – 8

Man of the match. A superb finish from United’s captain for the night provided his side with a route back into the match, and he was the catalyst in their turnaround. A fine performance from the man who was voted as the player of the tournament.

Javier Hernandez – 6

A great ball for Rooney’s first goal, but he could have been more involved generally and should have scored with a chance in the first half.

Luke Shaw – 7

After replacing Valencia early on, the youngster was in fine form. His energy down the left-hand side was excellent and his assist for Juan Mata’s goal was just reward for a fine display.

Tyler Blackett – 6

He doesn’t look out of place and that is a massive complement for a man of his age.

Tom Cleverley – 6

Energetic enough performance from Cleverley, as you would expect.

Jesse Lingaard – 6.5

Only on for the closing stages, but still made an impact by scoring United’s third. A moment for the youngster to savour.

Nani – 5

Not on long enough to make an impact on the game

Shinji Kagawa – 5

Another late sub who didn’t really make an impression. He will find out about his United future in the upcoming days.
