Cleverley has faced a lot of harsh criticism during his time at Old Trafford and with Louis van Gaal looking to offload some of his team ahead of the new season it is thought that Everton are looking to capitalise on the England international’s potential availability.
The Toffees are set to bid £8 million for the energetic midfield man, who will be expected to slot straight into their midfield.
It is thought that a deal could be done in the coming weeks, with Van Gaal set to meet with his United squad to inform them on their future in the near future.
It is unknown as yet whether Cleverley – who captained the side for one match during their pre-season tour of America – is wanted by the Dutchman, but there is a feeling at Everton that he will be told that he is free to move on.
It is a transfer that makes a lot of sense, too. Roberto Martinez has instilled a footballing style that requires a lot of midfield rotation and, despite facing a lot of derision, Cleverley’s strengths certainly lie in his mobility around the pitch.
Last season he also showed a lot of the qualities that Everton require for a player in their side.
|Team||Pos||Goal Assist||Won Tackle / apps||Interception / apps||Accurate Pass / apps||Touches / apps||Dispossessed / apps||Apps||Mins|
|Gareth Barry||Man City||MF||4||2.09||1.59||58.47||81.44||0.75||32||2,849|
|Tom Cleverley||Man Utd||MF||0||1.82||1.55||46.32||62.41||0.86||22||1,579|
His stats were comparable of those that James McCarthy, the player who has the closest skillset to Cleverley’s in the Everton squad at the minute, managed and although Gareth Barry stood-out there would certainly be value in adding the 24-year-old to the options of Goodison Park.
If he does join, he will be in direct competition with new signing Muhamed Besic and the aforementioned McCarthy for a place in the first-team, but with European football in the horizon Martinez is known to be wanting to strengthen his squad and bringing in Cleverley could be a good move for all concerned.
