All the latest Chelsea transfer news and rumours including a move for a player who Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger used to obsess over.
One of the most revered prospects in European football, Raphael Varane could be set for a reunion with his former mentor at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho, as the Chelsea boss is looking at recruiting the young centre back after facing a dead-end in negotiations for Atletico Madrid defender Joao Miranda.
Varane, 21, is a coveted centre back due to a: his tackling nous, b: his ability on the football and c: his age and obvious potential. The Frenchman, who starred for Les Bleus in the recent World Cup tournament in Brazil, was also one of a handful of Real Madrid athletes who Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had obsessed over acquiring ahead of the winter window last season.
But now it appears Mourinho could be at the front of the queue, as the Portuguese will "step up his interest" in Varane. According to reports, the player is set to have contract talks with Los Blancos but, should they not go as well as the player hopes, then he may wish to capitalise on the interest in his services.
Real's local rivals Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, could look to ratify quick sales of Joshua Guilavogui to Wolfsburg and Cristian Rodriguez to Sunderland in order to raise funds for World Cup winning attacker Andre Schurrle.
Would Mourinho want to sell the forward, who is quickly coming of age? Schurrle not.
With Oriol Romeu joining Stuttgart on loan, there may be a place for John Obi Mikel in the Chelsea roster after all, report the Standard.
And finally, the return of Stamford Bridge great Didier Drogba has "excited" Gary Cahill and given the club a lift.
