Barcelona legend Xavi announced his retirement from international football on Tuesday. Having played 133 matches for Spain in 14 years, the central midfielder has decided to call it a day.
The 34-year-old made his debut for La Furia Roja in 2000 and went on to establish himself as one his country’s greatest ever players.
Xavi was adjudged as the best player at Euro 2008 and was part of the Euro Team of the Tournament both in 2008 and 2012, while also finding himself in the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team in 2010.
Xavi will go down in history as one of the greatest players of all time and probably the best ever central midfielder. The Spaniard’s vision, creativity, passing range and ball possession skills are traits that made him the best player on the pitch on many occasions, with his opponents consistently failing to read his moves.
Following the announcement of his decision, a number of current and former footballers took to Twitter to express their opinions on Xavi.
Below is a selection of the best tweets, included those from Chelsea striker Fernando Torres and Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
