Chelsea boss Mourinho unhappy with treatment of 19-year-old

Mourinho Press Conference Still

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has hit out at Werder Bremen's approach to Nathan Ake.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has criticised both Werder Bremen and the referee for their approaches during Sunday's pre-season friendly.

The Portuguese boss oversaw his side's 3-0 defeat to the Bundesliga side, and later hit out at the way in which the match was contested, singling out the treatment of young star Nathan Ake.

He told Chelsea's website "Every duel and free-kick went against us, the penalties, especially the last one, were nonsense.

"Being aggressive with (Nathan) Ake, an 18-year-old, was disappointing. We wanted to train but the referee didn’t let us have a good session."

Mourinho's was slightly out with his comment, in that Ake turned 19 back in February, but his point still stands.

The Chelsea boss's use of language illustrates how he uses the friendly matches as training sessions, while he felt Werder played in a far more competitive spirit.

From Ake's perspective, the rough treatment may be a factor he has to learn to contend with if he is to thrive in the Premier League.

Chelsea do not have many weak links in their side, so a largely untested teenager being selected, will be one possible area opposing sides will test to exploit, beginning with whether or not he can handle the physical side of the game.

Ake must show Jose Mourinho first he can be trusted in such circumstances, and then repay that selection and earn more. The youngster has been linked with a loan move to Derby County in the past week, and whether the game plays any part in his manager's decision making will become apparent over the next month of the transfer window.
