Wayne Rooney has said that Manchester United’s new signings are already making a positive impression at the club.
The Red Devils have brought in Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw so far during Louis van Gaal’s first transfer window since taking over at Old Trafford, and Rooney says that the pair are already showing their quality.
“We’ve made some real quality signings and this has been shown in both training and in the games,” he said to his official website. “I’ve already played with Luke Shaw for England so I already know what a top player he is, and him along with the other signings have been really impressive.”
Both players have been involved on United’s thoroughly impressive tour of America so far and have caught the eye with their displays.
Herrera has shown a lot of the qualities that United were missing last season, driving forward from midfield with a purpose and moving the ball quickly when in possession, whilst Shaw’s class has already been proven in the Premier League last season with Southampton.
Just last week van Gaal said that the England international did have some improvements to make, though, especially with regards to his fitness.
The Dutchman has been utilising a 3-4-1-2 formation for much of the International Champions Cup competition that his side have been playing in during their time in America and it requires the wing-backs to get through a lot of running.
There are concerns that Shaw, as energetic as he is, still is not quite up to performing this role to the best of his ability due to his fitness levels and van Gaal is working hard to ensure that he does have the stamina to fill that role when the Premier League season starts.
Prior to that, United’s attention will be on the final of the friendly tournament which they are competing in, which takes place against Liverpool tonight.
Herrera and Shaw have helped United remain unbeaten throughout the tour so far and they will be hoping to show that form again against Brendan Rodgers’ side this evening.
If they can, Liverpool’s task of stopping them collecting their first silverware of the season looks a tough one and with more signings expected to arrive at Old Trafford in the near future it may be the first of many trophies that Van Gaal delivers this season.
