Samir Nasri comments on Lampard arrival; ‘He can help us’

Lampard will join Manchester City on loan fron New York City FC until January.

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri thinks the arrival of Frank Lampard can boos the Champions squad this season.

Lampard will join City on loan until January from the clubs sister MLS franchise, New York City FC, after leaving Chelsea last month.

Nasri believes Lampard’s experience in the Champions League will benefit them the most, having struggled in their previous three seasons in the competition.

“We'll particularly benefit from having him in the Champions League because that's where we need to improve this year,” Nasri is quoted as saying in the Manchester Evening News.

"He's won it and I think he can help us. It's good that he's an English player too and we've had a little problem with that."

Lampard will also count towards City’s home grown player count this season, something that will benefit in relation to the recently installed financial fair play rules. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was critical of the move on Sunday, suggesting the club could be sidestepping regulations.

The 36-year-old has a wealth of Champions League experience gained through his 13-years at Stamford Bridge, and will no doubt play a part in their star midfield until January.

City have the likes of Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, James Milner, Fernando, Nasri, Jesus Navas and David Silva occupying midfield places, with Lampard not likely to be a starter among them.

He does nevertheless represent great value in terms of finances, experience and most of all quality. Jose Mourinho didn’t see enough in Lampard to award him a new deal, but he is still a highly dangerous box-to-box midfielder.

Having adapted to a slightly more holding role over the last few seasons, Lampard could be key in providing a platform for the likes of Yaya Toure and Nasri to surge forward, and attempt to fire City to multiple silverware for the second consecutive season.
