Giants RB David Wilson's short NFL career sadly all but over

New York Giants running back David Wilson has been advised to walk away from the NFL after just two seasons as a result of ongoing neck problems.

David Wilson has been ruled out of the 2014 NFL season by doctors and is unlikely to ever play football again after his latest setback surrounding his recurring neck problems.

The 23-year-old running back has been placed on injured reserve by the New York Giants after damaging the nerves in his neck in practice last week and has been told by doctors that he should walk away from the game to prevent even further damage.

He picked up the neck injury in October last year in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles and underwent surgery in January, and despite high hopes that he would return to the team for the upcoming season, last week's setback looks to have confined Wilson's NFL career to a sad ending that has come far too soon for the former first-round pick.

Despite the news, Wilson has remained positive and is thankful that he has been able to live his dream playing in the NFL, and his statement after today's news suggests he will never take to the field again.

"I'm thankful that I can literally walk away from the game and that I am healthy and capable of doing the same things I have done all my life, except play football. I always try to find the positive in everything," he said.

"I don't want anybody to feel sorry for me, or pity me, I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too."

Wilson will end his career with five touchdowns in 21 games, rushing a total of 504 yards in his two years in the NFL.

The Giants will now turn to Rashad Jennings, Peyton Hills and rookie Andre Williams to share running back duties in the upcoming season.

The sad news for Wilson serves as a reminder of just how dangerous the NFL can be, but the 23-year-old is fortunate to be able to walk away from the game without further damaging himself beyond repair.

How will Wilson's absence affect the Giants in the upcoming season?
