Ex-Arsenal man reportedly handed bumper pay rise after renaissance

Roma have reportedly rewarded former Arsenal flop Gervinho with a salary bump after his impressive first season in the Eternal City.

Gervinho became something of an object of antipathy for Arsenal fans during his two years at the Emirates, but enjoyed a renaissance at Roma last term.

The Gunners offloaded the Ivorian to the capital club last summer at nearly a £5 million loss - bought for £10.8 million, sold for £6.3 million - on their initial investment in July 2011 after he failed to meet expectation in North London.

His switch to the Stadio Olimpico saw him link back up with coach Rudi Garcia, who Gervinho rose to prominence under during his time in Ligue 1 with Lille.

Garcia’s enduring faith in his former charge in France was heavily rewarded as the 27-year-old racked up nine goals and ten assists in 33 Serie A appearances.

And now, the pact winger is reportedly set to pick up a reward of his own. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma have agreed to raise Gervinho’s wages from £1.8 million per annum to £2.3 million for the remainder of his current deal.

Reports earlier in the summer indicated that the Ivory Coast international had requested a pay rise from the club, with La Gazzetta’s revelation seemingly confirming that the Giallorossi hierarchy agreed one was merited.

Roma president James Pallotta is known to maintain a strict wage structure, and his fulfilling Gervinho’s demands is in turn indicative of how highly the club value the former Gunner.

Gervinho attributed his revival to being back under Garcia’s guidance over the course of last season. Meanwhile, the French boss publicly stated he went to lengths to convince Roma to splash out for the ex-Lille man, feeling he could get the best out of him once again.

Garcia was certainly vindicated by the way that Gervinho acquitted himself at the Stadio Olimpico and with a strong World Cup performance, showed he can sustain success.

Roma appear to see what Garcia does in the Ivorian after he helped the side to a record points tally and second place finish in Serie A last time around - bringing Champions League football back to Rome.

Gervinho missed out on the Giallorossi’s USA tour due to visa issues but will meet up with his team-mates when the squad travels back to Europe this week - and begin the process of fighting for the Scudetto with a improved terms at his back.
