Arsenal's need for a defensive midfielder remains, and a potentially perfect candidate featured against them at the Emirates Cup at the weekend.
Impressive in Monaco's 1-0 win over the Gunners was 21-year-old Geoffrey Kondogbia, who dominated the midfield.
Kondogbia left Sevilla for Monaco a year ago, having been linked with Arsenal, but made just 16 starts for the Ligue 1 side last season.
He was singled out for praise by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger ahead of the fixture, who wrote in his pre-game programme notes:
"Kondogbia is a very interesting player because he's a left footed midfielder and he's one of the promising stars, just behind Pogba, in the French national team."
Wenger had also praised Kondogbia before his switch to Monaco, but seeing him first hand at The Emirates may spark him into action.
The 21-year-old could not hold down a regular place with the side last season, and if the Gunners offer the right money, Monaco may be tempted to sell.
Fans watching at The Emirates were suitably convinced by Kondogbia's display against Arsenal:
This match just proves that we need a real midfield bruiser. Kondogbia running the show. #AFC— Ted (@TweetforTeddy) August 3, 2014
We need a strong holding midfielder that can break up plays and also push forward, Geoffery Kondogbia ticked All those boxes today... #AFC— Josh Smith (@WiddersJS) August 3, 2014
We need a Kondogbia in our team ASAP. A proper DM. Arteta just hasn't got it anymore and it's been alarmingly apparent for a while #AFC— Daniel Howlett (@DanielHowlett) August 3, 2014
Tell you one thing today was my 1st time seeing kondogbia in action live. And he's a seriously impressive player. So athletic. #afc— michael connolly (@diddly3000) August 3, 2014
Should Wenger act on his admiration for Kondogbia?
