Arsenal and Manchester United reportedly vying for 'the next Aaron Ramsey'

Preston North End

Arsenal and Manchester United are reportedly vying for the signature of Preston North End youngster Josh Brownhill.

Both clubs have spent big already this summer, with Arsenal forking out around £65m on goalkeeper David Ospina, right backs Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers and forward Alexis Sanchez, whilst United spent a similar amount on Southampton left back Luke Shaw and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

Managers Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal will both be looking for strong seasons and ultimately top four finishes, but whilst this season will obviously be the priority, looking to the future has also been on the agenda with the respective signings of Chambers and Shaw.

That focus on the future could now lead to a transfer battle between the two clubs over Preston midfielder Brownhill, who has been labelled 'the next Aaron Ramsey' by some pundits following an impressive debut season at Deepdale. According to The Sun, both clubs have been eyeing Brownhill this summer.

Released by United just a year ago, Brownhill was snapped up by Preston's youth setup. However, a glut of goals at under 18 level led to manager Simon Grayson promoting Brownhill to the first team, and he repaid the manager's faith with the winning goal on his debut against Gillingham in October.

Grayson was cautious with the 18-year-old's development last season, often using him in small doses in order to relieve some pressure on the young star. Yet now, having been prolific in pre-season, Brownhill is tipped to be one of Preston's key players this term as the Lilywhites look to return to the Championship.

A strong start to the season could increase interest in Brownhill, but with his value increasing by the game, Preston could be looking to reap in close to the £5m that Arsenal paid for the aforementioned Ramsey in 2008.
