Arsene Wenger has been speaking about the moment he decided to sign Calum Chambers.
The Frenchman told reporters after second day of the Emirates Cup on Sunday, that he made his mind to sign the England youth star after facing Southampton last season.
He told Arsenal.com: "I saw him first time against us as a right back and I liked him. At the end of the season he didn’t play too much at Southampton. But I made my mind up to buy him after I saw him against us."
Wenger went onto add that he is convinced Chambers has what it takes to shine in central midfield, despite playing him in defence over the weekend.
He said: "He’s one of the satisfactions of the weekend. He can play as well central midfield because he’s got good technique, good mobility and is a great distance runner.
"At the moment it’s where I can have a look at him. But I think he can also play central midfield."
Chambers featured when Arsenal took on Southampton last season at St Mary's, a 2-2 draw in which he made more tackles (5) than any other Saints player.
