Tottenham Hotspur are said to be closing in on their fourth signing of the summer in £21 million-rated central defender Mateo Musacchio.
The Villarreal star has been linked with a move away from the club over the summer after an impressive campaign back in Spain’s top flight last season.
To increase speculation further, the 23-year-old missed his club’s 2-0 friendly match over Championship outfit Middlesbrough yesterday and Villarreal boss Marcelino Garcia Toral told reporters of the prospect of losing his star player.
“Mateo is a very important player for Villarreal, a momentous player and his loss would be very difficult to cover. Moreover, he plays in a position which I have mentioned before that is extremely hard to reinforce.” He said, quoted by Spanish newspaper AS.
Musacchio would be new boss Mauricio Pochettino’s biggest signing of the summer following the completion of fellow defender Eric Dier from Sporting for a reported £4million.
Central defence seems to be a key area to strengthen for Spurs this summer as they bid to improve on the whopping 51 goals conceded – the most in the top eight - last season.
Musacchio, standing at 6ft exactly, is described as a technical defender with an excellent passing range and the ability to bring the ball out from the back.
He has made a total of 139 appearances for the La Liga outfit since joining the club in 2009, scoring three goals.
