Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo is to fly to Liverpool on Monday to undergo a medical after completing a two-year loan deal, the Liverpool Echo reports.
The 20-year-old right-back joined Atletico Madrid in 2007 and developed at the club’s youth academy before making his way into the senior set-up.
Despite being included in Diego Simeone’s first-team squad, Manquillo barely featured for the Vicente Calderon outfit and made a total of just six league appearances for the side.
His availability this season caught the attentions of a number of fellow La Liga sides, with neighbouring Madrid-based outfit Rayo Vallecano linked with a loan move.
Instead, it is Liverpool who have won the race for his signature and the Reds’ have captured the player on a two-year loan deal with the option to make the move permanent next summer for around £5million, though this could be dependent on appearances.
Standing at 5ft 9inch, the Spanish U20 international is described as a technical right-back with the ability to break forward and support the attack.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been keen to bolster his fullback options ahead of next season as he plans to juggle a Premier League title challenge with a European campaign.
Other than perhaps Jose Enrique, last season’s fullbacks Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan lack competition and an injury to either player could cause the Merseysiders a number of problems.
Manquillo will provide adequate cover at right-back and he will be tasked with pushing England international Glen Johnson for a start in the first-team.
Will Javier Manquillo prove to be a successful signing for Liverpool?
