Manchester United and Chelsea to miss out as €30m star decides to stay in Madrid

Reported Manchester United and Chelsea target Miranda is said to have decided to stay with Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United and Chelsea may have to look elsewhere to bolster their defensive ranks after Atletico Madrid star Joao Miranda has reportedly decided to stay with the club.

According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, after much consideration the Brazilian defender has opted against following ex-teammates Filipe Luis and Diego Costa out of the club.

“Joao Miranda will play this season at Atletico Madrid. After seriously considering a possible exit from the club, the Brazilian has decided to stay.” The report claims.

Miranda had a host of club interested in him this summer following his success last season, with Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea leading the way.

United were reportedly the first club to show an interest as the Red Devils bid to replace the departed Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

Despite the Old Trafford outfit still being light in central defence, they presumably deemed Miranda’s €30million asking price too expensive given his age - the 29-year-old turns 30 next month.

Chelsea seemingly joined the interested party later on into the summer, with boss Jose Mourinho also setting his sights on a new defender following the big-money sale of David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain.

Spanish reports later claimed that the Blues put in an offer of €25million for the defender though Los Colchoneros considered the offer insufficient and negotiations stopped there.

Miranda joined the Madrid-based side in the summer of 2011 from Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo after spending the previous five years in his native country.

In his three-year spell at the club to date, the central defender has made 94 La Liga appearances and helped the club with the Spanish title along with the Europe League and the Copa Del Rey.
