There are few football players in the history of the sport that are more highly-regarded than Cristiano Ronaldo, and it appears that even the Manchester United squad were slightly star-struck when they came up against the Portuguese super-star last night.
Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher both posed for photos with the Real Madrid attacker, while the latter also used the opportunity to get the signature of his former team-mate.
In the game Ronaldo only made a brief performance, coming on as a substitute towards the end of the match.
His introduction made little impact either as United continued their impressive pre-season form – winning the match 3-1 thanks to two goals from Ashley Young and a late Javier Hernandez header.
It was a win that put United into the final of the pre-season tournament, where they will take on Liverpool for the chance of winning their first silverware of the season.
They will be hoping it won’t be the last opportunity to win a trophy they have during this campaign, too, as van Gaal looks to return them to past glories.
Madrid, meanwhile, will also be hoping to step up their performance this season as they look to defend their Champions League title and win La Liga with their expensively assembled squad.
Crucial to this, as always, will be the form of Ronaldo and the respect he commands from his peers shows just how good a footballer he is.
There is a debate to suggest that he is the best player ever to play the game – as he has scored 177 times in 165 games for Madrid.
He also developed this reputation at United previously in his career, representing the club for six years between 2003 and 2009.
Ronaldo was quick not to rule out a return to Old Trafford in the future before the game, too.
He said: “I love Manchester, to be back, I never know, you never know. Of course I’m happy at Real Madrid, it’s my home, it’s my club but Manchester treat me unbelievable so we never know.”
If he was to return, it looks like he would be welcomed with open arms with Fletcher and Rooney clearly delighted to see their old friend again last night.
