Leeds United's new quartet of signings from Italy were pictured in action in the Whites' 2-0 friendly win over Dundee United.
Leeds United’s new summer recruits were given their first taste of action at Elland Road and they would have enjoyed the experience, as the Whites ran out 2-0 winners in their final pre-season friendly.
Goals from Steve Morison and Dominic Poleon provided the victory for David Hockaday’s men as they closed off their pre-season in style.
Leeds take on Millwall next Saturday in their first Championship fixture of the season; and this was a good chance for the players to get used to playing at their new home ground ahead of when the competitive football starts.
New signings Marco Silvestri, Souleymane Doukara, Tommaso Bianchi and Gaetano Berardi were all on display, as they looked to impress the fans of their new club.
So far this season it has been Bianchi who has made the biggest impression of Leeds’ clutch of Italian recruits, with a number of eye-catching displays in central midfield.
He was supposed to be partnered by his compatriot, Federico Viviani for the new campaign, but Leeds’ deal to sign the Roma player on loan fell through this week, with the player opting to stay in Italy instead of moving to the Championship.
Silverstri has also won a number of admirers after a string of good saves in Leeds’ pre-season so far, while Doukara’s presence has proved to be a threat.
It does not change the fact that Leeds fans go into this season largely not knowing what to expect, though.
Their new signings are basically unknowns to most fans of English football and head coach, David Hockaday, has never managed at this level before meaning it is an experiment which could go one of two ways.
The optimist will point at the fact that they have scoured some of Serie A’s brightest prospects, whilst the pessimist may say that they have a bunch of unproven players and have lost their catalyst from last season in Ross McCormack over the course of the transfer window.
What is to be certain is that the fans’ at Elland Road deserve a better showing than they have seen in recent years from their side, given the backing that they give their side, and they will have been cautiously impressed from what they have seen from their new signings so far.
