On this day in 1999 Arsenal completed a deal to sign Thierry Henry in a move that will go down as one of their greatest ever transfers.
It was 15 years ago today when Arsene Wenger arguably pulled off the greatest transfer in his entire time as Arsenal manager.
The Frenchman brought in Thierry Henry on this day in 1999 from Juventus for £11million, and in doing so he changed the course of Arsenal history.
At the time Gunners fans had no idea just how vital a signing Henry would become, but it was a deal that confirmed Wenger’s superb ability to bring in young players and make them superstars.
The long serving Arsenal manager brought Henry as a jinking left-winger from Juve, but he transformed him into a clinical centre-forward, who loved to play on the shoulder of the last man.
In the end he would become Arsenal’s record goalscorer – notching 228 goals in 377 appearances for the London club – and writing his name into their history as one of their greatest ever players.
There is now a statue outside the Emirates commemorating Henry’s achievements and ensuring he remains remembered by new generations of Gunners fans as they start to support the club.
Henry was part of Arsenal’s most successful period of all-time, where they swept all before them in the English game.
They remain the only team in Premier League history to win England’s top division and remain unbeaten for the entirety of the season, with Henry a protagonist in their success.
In-truth, since the Frenchman’s departure Arsenal have never reached the heights that he guided them to. But there is a hope that they can return to past glories this season.
Henry won a number of titles at Arsenal including the aforementioned Premier League and the FA Cup, but the Champions League evaded him and he left in 2007 to achieve his goal.
At Barcelona, the club he joined, he did just that and he continued to enhance his reputation as one of the greatest strikers ever to play the game.
Today Arsenal fans’ attention will be on their Emirates Cup exploits, but it is worth taking a moment to remember that 15 years ago a signing that became one of the most important in their club’s history was announced.
