Michael Owen says Arsenal desperately lack a commanding midfielder.
When there is optimism at Arsenal, you can usually rely on Michael Owen to come along and spike it.
The former Liverpool striker said last season when they were top of the league he expected them to come fifth, and was only one place out with his prediction.
This summer, after the signing of Alexis Sanchez, he re-affirmed his view they would do well to get into the top four.
Now after their mixed Emirates Cup showing, beating Benfica 5-1 and losing 1-0 to Monaco, he has said there is one player they sorely lack.
Reason for optimism at Arsenal. Improved squad but desperate for a commanding central midfielder. They were overran in there today.— michael owen (@themichaelowen) August 3, 2014
Owen may not be every Arsenal fans cup of tea, his commentary took a barracking on social media yesterday, but the central midfield is certainly an area Gooners would not be upset to see strengthened.
The Gunners have been linked in recent weeks with Sami Khedira, William Carvalho, and previously had a bid reported for Lars Bender, but whether they will make a move remains to be seen.
Wenger may decide Abou Diaby, if fit, covers the need in midfield, while his recent comments that new defensive signing Calum Chambers can play there, also gives him an extra reason not to spend. Jack Wilshere may also be played in the position, while Mathieu Flamini is able to also cover.
The Frenchman said last week he was still 'open for business', but if the right player does not come along at what he considers the right price, don't be concerned to see him stick rather than twist.
Arsenal fans, do you agree or disagree with Michael Owen on this one?
