Following Barcelona’s first major trophy-less campaign in six years, the Catalans have made radical changes over the summer in a bid to improve next season.
Aside from a managerial change, a total of 20 transactions have been made as key players such as Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas have moved on while a number of big-money signings have arrived.
Among those new arrivals are French international defender Jeremy Mathieu, Ivan Rakitic from Sevilla and Luis Suarez from Liverpool.
The former Reds man is currently serving a four-month ban for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup and new Barca star Jeremy Mathieu told reporters what he will do if the Uruguayan repeats that behaviour.
"To be honest, if he bites me, I will do nothing. But I think he will learn from his mistakes for sure. He is a great player, and hopefully that will never happen again." He said, quoted by the Independent.
The Catalans purchased the Reds’ top goalscorer for a headline-making €81million, the biggest transfer fee of the summer so far, though his arrival has arguably left a black mark over the integrity of the Nou Camp outfit.
Renowned worldwide for their proud tradition of beautiful football and respect both on and off the field, bringing in a three-time offender of biting opponents and a player who was found guilty of a racial slur has left the club open to criticism.
Mathieu, however, has stated that despite the Uruguayan’s indiscretions the star striker will be warmly received by everyone connected to Barca.
“We know Luis Suarez has a very strong character and that he is a great player. I think after the ban he will show what he is capable of and that everyone will be very happy to have him at Barcelona.”
27-year-old Suarez was Europe’s most prolific striker last season, scoring 31 Premier League goals for Liverpool in just 33 starts.
