Last summer Arsenal were said to be close to securing defensive midfielder Josuha Guilavogui before he opted for Atletico Madrid in a €10million move.
The Gunners instead made do with fellow Frenchman Mathieu Flamini throughout the season, but if the latest report is to be believed, boss Arsene Wenger is now looking elsewhere.
Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira has been heavily linked in the press over the summer, but the North Londoners have also kept an eye on Guilavogui if reports are true.
According to Sky Sports Italia, the Gunners are competing with Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg in a bid to acquire the 23-year-old’s services.
The Germans are said to be seriously pursuing a deal, and that a bid worth €14.5million has been sounded out as they wish to beat Arsenal in the race to sign him.
Guilavogui is a defensive midfielder, renowned for his strength in tackling and ability to break up the play in midfield with speed and efficiency.
His time so far in the Spanish capital has been nothing short of a nightmare as the former St Etienne star made just one appearance last season before returning to his former club on loan.
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has plenty of options in midfield and it appears that Guilavogui is surplus to requirements, making a possible exit all the more likely.
He would offer Arsenal a cheaper alternative to Sami Khedira, although the Emirates outfit may have to make their move quickly if they want to avoid missing out on him for the second time in 12 months.
