As Liverpool prepare for next match, boss reveals it’s game like no other

Liverpool face AC Milan this weekend, and the Italian club's coach has many memories of facing the Reds in the past.

AC Milan head coach Filipo Inzaghi has been speaking ahead of his side’s pre-season friendly against Liverpool on Saturday night.

The two sides come face to face in Charlotte, USA in the latest match in the Guinness International Champions Cup, with Liverpool having a 100% record to date.

A potential final against Manchester United looms if Louis van Gaal’s side overcome Real Madrid and the Reds beat Milan.

But the Italians have their own reasons for wanting to get one over Brendan Rodgers’ side.

In quotes published by Football Italia, Inzaghi said, “Milan-Liverpool cannot be a game like any other.”

Of course he was referring to arguably the greatest Champions League final of all time, when Liverpool fought back from 3-0 down to take the trophy on penalties, and the match two years later, in which the Serie A club got their revenge.

“Every time I see that game back I get emotional,” the Milan coach said of the second game. “It will always remain my happiest memory as a player.

“Of course I hope to experience those emotions again. Now that I am sitting on the bench, I can imagine what Carlo Ancelotti felt that night.”

Some pre-season friendlies are merely kick-abouts. But others have far more at stake and tonight’s match belongs firmly in the latter category.

With Liverpool back in the Champions League next season, it will be interesting to see if Rodgers can ultimately replicate the European successes of his predecessors.
