The departure of Antonio Conte from Juventus has made AS Roma favourites among many Serie A followers to win their first Scudetto since 2001.
After all, the Italian coach was key to the Turin giants clinching three successive Scudetti, and his resignation last month has reinforced suggestions that star players such as Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba could leave this summer.
On the other hand, Roma, who finished second in Serie A last season in what was Rudi Garcia’s debut campaign as coach in Italy, have signed a number of high-profile players already this summer.
Seydou Keita, Ashley Cole, Juan Iturbe and Urby Emanuelson have all joined the Giallorossi, leading midfielder Miralem Pjanic to claim that, with the players already in the squad, this season the Rome-based club could eventually win the title.
‘We can overtake Juventus’, the 24-year-old told Goal.com. ‘We are stronger with several great players and I believe we can achieve many good things in Italy.
'We have Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi, Kevin Strootman and new signings who have won trophies and know what is needed to win’.
It will be of interest to Manchester United fans that Bosnia and Herzegovina midfielder Pjanic – who himself was once linked with a move to the Red Devils - mentions Strootman as one of the key players for Roma next season – perhaps an indication that he will not leave this summer.
The 24-year-old Netherlands international midfielder is reported to be a key transfer target of Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal, who, according to Goal.com, has told his bosses that he is ready to wait until January to sign him.
Strootman, who is rated at £79 million, is on his way to recovering from a serious knee injury that forced him to miss the 2014 World Cup campaign for the Netherlands, and his former Oranje boss Van Gaal wants to monitor his progress during the first half of the season.
The player himself has not given any indication that he wants to leave for United, while Roma coach Garcia considers him a key component of his team.
And judging from Pjanic’s comments, it seems that Strootman’s teammates have no doubts that he will remain at the Stadio Olimpico and drive Roma to Scudetto success this season.
