Manchester United latest: Real Madrid build-up and Evra captaincy claims

News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

Manchester United take on Real Madrid on Saturday in front of 109,000 spectators in Ann Arbor, Michigan in a friendly on their pre-season tour of the USA.

United could play either Manchester City or Liverpool in Miami for the Guinness International Champions Cup as part of their pre-season schedule, should they progress through their clash with Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, defender Jonny Evans aims to become United’s main man in the backline following the departure of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer.

“If you look at Nemanja Vidic, he did not join us until he was 25 or 26. I think I have benefited playing with Rio and Nemanja for a long time, and Wes Brown before that, and learning a lot through my career. It is a big time in my career now,” said Evans.

Youngster Phil Jones also hopes to establish himself in the heart of United’s defence following the departures of the veterans.

“Of course, replacing those guys is ultimately what I want to be doing. Everyone is trying to impress and hopefully we can start the season off well,” he explained.

‘You’ve got to thrive on the challenge.”

Former vice-captain Patrice Evra revealed Louis van Gaal wanted to make him club captain to thwart the fullback’s move to Juventus and keep him at Old Trafford, whilst also urging the Italian champions to sign Nani.

“Manchester United wanted to keep me and they also wanted to give me the captain's band,” he reportedly told Sky Sports.

“He is a great player and it was a privilege for me to play with Nani. If Juve are interested in him, I can only say that Nani would be a great purchase,” Evra said of his former teammate.

United’s players are facing ‘trial by camera’ as Louis van Gaal trains video cameras on the players in training to assess their performances in detail. The club are set to install video cameras at the Carrington Training ground at the request of the Dutch coach.

In transfer news, United are hopeful of ‘reviving’ a move for Mats Hummels, despite Borussia Dortmund’s reluctance to sell the Germany defender for less than €100 million as previously stated by Jurgen Klopp.

However, Dortmund are reportedly ‘lining up’ a replacement in Tiago Ilori leading to speculation in the Daily Mail that a deal for Hummels to join United could yet be agreed.

Meanwhile, Napoli’s chairman has confirmed their interest in midfielder Marouane Fellaini, suggesting he could be the ideal man to play alongside Gokhan Inler at the Serie A giants.

Finally, The Mirror reports that Arturo Vidal may have reserved the No.7 shirt at Old Trafford ahead of a possible move to United this summer.
