Arsene Wenger denies Quintero links but gives hope on Khedira deal

Arsene Wenger has held his press conference ahead of the Emirates Cup this weekend.

Last night it was heavily reported that Arsenal were on the brink of signing Juan Quintero from FC Porto. The Colombian, who scored at the World Cup, was said to be flying into the UK by several UK media outlets - most of which were referencing reports in Colombia.

His agent however was quick to make a comment on the potential move.

Ricardo Calleri suggested nothing was imminent, and also made it clear that at the reported fee of £15.8 million no deal was likely:

"Porto have never talked about negotiating the sale of Juan Quintero. Of course, there are clubs interested. There is a lot of interest from clubs from Spain and England in the player. But in order for him to leave, a club has to pay his buy-out clause."

That buy-out clause is set at a figure around the £31 million mark, so there is surely no chance they will be signing him.

Indeed, they won't, as Wenger seemed almost perplexed at the idea during his Emirates Cup press conference this afternoon.

When quizzed on the subject Wenger said:

"No. That is wrong, that is a lie."

So no deal for Quintero - and Wenger also denied a deal was ever on to sign Mario Balotelli from AC Milan.

However he did admit that he was open to more business.

Which might have Arsenal fans excited, as despite quickly denying that Quintero and Balotelli could be on their way, when asked about Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira's apparent availability Wenger refused to comment.

Real Madrid are keen to sell Khedira before his contract expires next summer and are said to be pushing Arsenal to make a move for the player - who is good friends with Mesut Ozil.

With Wenger dismissive of Quintero and Balotelli, but stand-offish of Khedira, Arsenal fans might be getting even more excited about the potential to sign the German midfielder this summer.

He also confirmed that Thomas Vermaelen could leave the club this summer.
