Arsenal latest: Vermaelen could leave and Balotelli never an option

All the latest news and gossip from The Emirates this evening.

Arsene Wenger has today admitted that Thomas Vermaelen could be sold by the club. The Belgian international is currently the club captain, but he has been on the side-lines at The Emirates in recent months - suffering with injuries and due to the form of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

When asked about Vermaelen today Wenger stated:

"At the moment, he is here. It could happen. Yes, it's a possibility that he goes and if he goes we have to replace him because he is an important player in our squad. I expect him to stay but of course he did not play enough games last year. For me he is a very important player but I couldn’t give him the games that he wanted last year so I will see."

Vermaelen is being linked with both Manchester United and Barcelona.

He also addressed rumours linking the club with Juan Quintero and Mario Balotelli. The club were heavily linked with the Colombian late last night, while Balotelli links have rumbled on for a number of weeks:

"That's wrong [on Quintero]. For weeks, we were buying [Mario] Balotelli from one minute to the other and it was all wrong. We do not master all the noises that come out."

He did however admit a desire to sign more players, but would not be drawn on speculation linking the club with Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.

Wenger also confirmed that Joel Campbell would play a part for Arsenal this season and that David Ospina is injured for the Emirates Cup.

Wenger has also tipped Jack Wilshere for a great season at The Emirates. He claims the England international is in the best condition of his career and can be a star for the side in the Premier League next term.
