With two new right-backs joining the club this summer in Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers it was always going to be difficult for Carl Jenkinson to establish himself in the Arsenal set-up this season.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has elected to send the 22-year-old to West Ham on loan for the entire 2014-15 campaign, where he will have the opportunity to play regular first-team football.
Since signing for Arsenal in 2011 Jenkinson has made 37 appearances for the club, mostly stepping in to the right-back role when Bacary Sagna was injured.
The Englishman received a mixed response from Arsenal fans when he did feature in the first team. Some regard him as a solid young player who could one day develop into a top class full-back, while others believe he will never have the quality to start for the North London club on a consistent basis.
The Loan deal has widely been recognised as a good bit of business by Arsenal. It allows them to ship out a player who would not see much first-team action next season, but if he does improve considerably they can bring him back next season.
Gunners fans on Twitter were generally supportive of Jenkinson, saying they hoped he returns to Arsenal next year a better player.
We wish Jenkinson well on loan at West Ham. Is Allardyce the ideal manager for Jenkinson? We wish him well.— Wenger Knows Best (@wengerknowsbest) July 31, 2014

Glad we haven't sold Carl Jenkinson he's arsenal through and through hopefully this loan gives him the experience he needs to push on for us— Luis Beldon (@LuisBeldon) July 31, 2014
Other fans, however, were pleased with the deal only because it meant Jenkinson would not be playing in red and white next season.
Jenkinson. Can't fault the lad's commitment and desire to play for Arsenal, but unfortunately probably not good enough. Good luck at WHUFC— Charlie Carver (@GoonerCharles) July 31, 2014
Good to see Jenkinson leaving the club, let's hope West Ham have the option to make it permanent ! Not good enough. #Arsenal— Jordan Stock (@Jooord374) July 31, 2014
