With the 2014-15 Serie A season just around the corner, we look at the best 11 players in the Italian top flight, including former Manchester United and Manchester City stars and an ex-Arsenal target…
A new month, a new season. One of the world’s most popular domestic football leagues kicks off on August 30, and we now look at the top 11 players in Serie A.
Yours truly has considered players who are officially still in the squads of the 20 teams in the Italian top flight at the time of writing.
For example, Arturo Vidal, who is reported to be a key transfer target of Manchester United and could cost up to £60 million, is in the team as he is still on the books of Italian champions Juventus.
Moreover, this writer has included players not just based on current form but on overall quality and potential.
For example, last season Mattia Perin of Genoa was the best goalkeeper in Serie A, but Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon has been given the spot between the posts as he remains one of the best in his position in the world.
Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic also finds himself in the Serie A XI despite officially joining Inter Milan this summer.
The Serbia centre-back remains one of the best in his position on the planet and although he needs to adapt to the tactical aspects of the Italian game, the 32-year-old’s quality and calibre cannot be disputed.
Former Manchester United and Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez leads the line, with his Argentina compatriot and Napoli star Gonzalo Higuain – who was on the radar of Arsenal last summer – and Fiorentina forward Giuseppe Rossi (also an ex-United player) completing the front three.
Juventus maestro Andrea Pirlo is one of a kind and is joined in midfield by his teammates Vidal and Paul Pogba, with Roma star Daniele De Rossi deployed in defensive midfield.
Given that Serie A is very competitive with a plethora of world-class players, many star names had to be left out.
Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik, Juventus striker Fernando Llorente, Roma forward Francesco Totti and Fiorentina midfielder Borja Valero all had to be omitted.
Below is yours truly’s Serie A XI ahead of the 2014-15 campaign.
