Serie A transfer latest: Roma join the race to sign Fellaini - Strootman impact?

All the latest summer transfer news from Serie A...

Reports last night suggested that Napoli boss Rafael Benitez had lined up a swoop to sign Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini. The former Everton star, 26, has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since his £27.5m move almost a year ago, and it was believed that Napoli wanted to end his misery.

Yet now, they could have competition for his signature as Serie A rivals Roma have also reportedly joined the race. Manager Rudi Garcia has already brought in two midfielders this summer in Seydou Keita and Salih Ucan, but any move for Fellaini could be a pre-cursor to Kevin Strootman's move in the opposite direction, which has been tipped to happen in January.

Elsewhere, Inter Milan are still desperately trying to boost their attack. Moves to sign Manchester United's Javier Hernandez and Southampton's Dani Osvaldo are ongoing, but it seems that another target - former AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato - won't be heading back to the San Siro this summer.

"I have received a few proposals," said Pato. "That is true, but at the moment I don’t want to leave. I want to stay here and respect my loan at Sao Paulo. My goal is to win things here. I’m already at a great club."

Sticking with Walter Mazzari's men, that deal to sign Osvaldo appears to be drawing closer and closer as the days go by. The former Roma striker endured a tough half-season on the South Coast before a loan move back to Italy with Juventus, and Inter want to bring to Serie A once again.

A reported swap deal for Algerian midfielder Saphir Taider may not go ahead, with Inter now trying to send wing back Ezequiel Schelotto to St. Mary's instead. The 25-year-old is on the fringes at Inter, and could help replace Calum Chambers at Southampton.
