It was a deal that in the end moved very quickly. After a breakthrough in communication last night Everton and Chelsea finally agreed on a fee for the services of 21-year-old striker Romelu Lukaku.
In the end it was a club record deal, Everton paying a fee in the region of £28 million to bring the player back to Goodison Park - where he enjoyed a successful season on loan in 2013-14.
It demonstrates a fantastic backing from the Everton board in their manager Roberto Martinez - and his ideas for the future of the club. It is also an excellent way to reinvest the money they received for Marouane Fellaini almost a year ago.
For Lukaku it brings to an end his time at Chelsea. When he signed he spoke of his boyhood support for the club and fondness for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He was supposed to be the next Didier Drogba. But it never quite worked for the player and Chelsea were happy to sell him in order to keep FFP problems off their front door.
Lukaku is of course ecstatic about the move, and has taken to Instagram to explain how happy he is. But he also had time to mention Chelsea - thanking them for setting him along this path...
"So happy with this! I want to thank the board, the manager and his staff and the players for this chance to become a better player. I want to thank Chelsea as well for the opportunity as well for the opportunity to come to England and to teach me how to be a better player but it was the right time to move on and i'm happy to play for this club. I want to thank my fans as well for the support throughout my career and for keeping it. God bless you all"
