The Chelsea stopper was pictured working hard in training as he looks to impress Jose Mourinho during pre-season
Thibaut Courtois was pictured training with his Chelsea teammates today, as he prepares to face his first action of pre-season which is set to come against Werder Bremen on Sunday.
The Belgium ‘keeper will finally be given a chance of perform at Stamford Bridge after spending the past three seasons at Atletico Madrid in La Liga and he will be hoping to impress on his maiden pre-season appearance.
The Blues are currently touring Europe and they will play Werder Bremen in Germany at the weekend. It will be the first chance for Jose Mourinho to see the returning star in action.
He is in direct competition with Petr Cech for a starting place between the sticks for Chelsea and, therefore, it is likely that he will have to perform to his maximum during pre-season to convince the Portuguese manager to pick him as his number one.
In Cech and Courtois, Chelsea have the best goalkeeping line-up in the Premier League, and arguably the world, but keeping both of them happy over the course of the season will be a challenge.
Cech has already gone on record to state the competition will motivate him further, but if he is consigned to the bench then he may look to move on in the near future – as a goalkeeper of his talents will be highly sought after.
Courtois, too, has got used to playing first-team football and will not be happy returning to Stamford Bridge as backup, making it a tricky scenario for Mourinho to manage this campaign.
What will be imperative for both their chances of being in Chelsea’s starting XI when the competitive season begins is their performances in training and in matches during pre-season and it seems that Courtois is trying hard to impress – as he was pictured going through fitness drills and making saves today.
