Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling has posted a picture of himself celebrating after scoring against Manchester City in last night’s friendly and praised the team’s spirit.
In the post on the social media site, Instagram, Sterling can be seen performing what is becoming his trade-mark celebration with the caption: "Good win. Great team spirit."
The Reds were in a involved penalty shoot-out victory over City last night after the contest ended 2-2 in normal time.
It is the second time that Sterling has scored on the tour, after he bagged the only go of the game in Liverpool’s win against Olympiacos last week.
The youngster put in a number of excellent displays towards the back end of last season and the signs are that he could be set to carry that form into the upcoming campaign – as he has caught the eye during pre-season so far.
Last night Sterling scored a late equaliser to level the scores, showing good composure to slot the ball beyond the on-rushing Joe Hart after Lucas had laid it off into his path.
His goalscoring exploits have offered hope that the Merseyside outfit can compensate for the loss of Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan departed for Barcelona this summer and finding a regular scorer of his ilk will be virtually impossible – meaning Rodgers will be relying on the his squad to step up to ensure that Suarez’s departure is not too detrimental to their performances.
The fleet-footed winger’s words suggest that they are determined to do that too, as he spoke of the ‘great spirit’ in the Liverpool camp.
It shows that there are few lasting effects from last season’s agonising near miss, where Liverpool let the Premier League title slip from their hands, and that the squad are fully focused on making sure that they stay in the Champions League spots again this year.
The Reds end their tour of the USA with a match against AC Milan on Saturday and Sterling will be hoping that he can continue scoring and post another picture of himself celebrating after the game.
