News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes striker Wayne Rooney should be the next club captain, ahead of Robin van Persie, following the departure of both Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra this summer at Old Trafford.
“I think he [Van Gaal] will give it [the captaincy] to Robin [Van Persie]. He’s had a lot of experience with him from Holland. He knows him well, knows him as a player, but personally I would probably go for Rooney,” said Scholes.
United will take on Real Madrid in a friendly on Saturday in Michigan, continuing their pre-season tour of the USA, in which former club hero Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to feature.
New signing fullback Luke Shaw is ‘looking forward’ to the challenge against Real Madrid.
“Considering it's a pre-season tour, the teams we are playing against are unbelievable," he told the club site. "Roma and Inter are both big teams but I think the one everyone looked forward to is Real Madrid.”
This comes as Louis van Gaal revealed he still wants to sign a defender this summer before the new campaign.
“We are doing well but we are looking for defenders,” said the manager.
Reported United target Edinson Cavani has ‘ruled out’ a move away from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. "I'm certain that I'll stay - why wouldn't I?" Cavani told L’Equipe. "I feel very good in Paris, I have a contract to respect at PSG. I'd prefer to be here. I feel good here."
Meanwhile, The Independent suggests Arturo Vidal could be set to ‘force through’ a move to United this summer from Juventus.
In other news, United’s owners the Glazer family are set to sell shares estimated to be worth £89 million as the club admits they will lose over £20 million from their deal with sportswear giant Adidas if the team fails to qualify for the Champions League next season.
This has led to Sky Sports to report that the club have ‘warned’ Louis van Gaal over the implications of not qualifying for the elite European competition.
