Liverpool player ratings from shootout win over City - Sterling shines

Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling both netted as Liverpool twice fought back from a deficit to ultimately prevail in a penalty shootout against Manchester City in New York.

Brad Jones 6/10 - Didn’t have a great deal to do in the first half, but made a confident pair of saves when called upon.

Martin Kelly 6/10 - Didn’t get out on the front foot as much as Brendan Rodgers would’ve liked, but turned in a solid shift. Successfully prevented James Milner from getting to the byline on most occasions.

Sebastian Coates 6.5/10 - Generally dealt well with the threat of Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic in another impressive display. Should’ve done better in allowing the Montenegrin too much time to slot home his second goal of the night.

Kolo Toure 6.5/10 - Was a steady presence defending in the air and made sure Liverpool weren’t beaten on set pieces. Nearly scored himself with a header from a corner in the second half, but was denied by Joe Hart.

Jose Enrique 5/10 - A thoroughly frustrating 45 minutes for the Spaniard, who is still building up fitness after his lengthy injury lay off. Beaten time and time again by Jesus Navas and struggled to get forward as a result.

Jordan Henderson 7/10 - Motored up and down the pitch with purpose in typical style. Netted a well-taken goal with an intelligent first-time effort from 12 yards out. Completed the full 90 minutes for the second straight game.

Steven Gerrard 6.5/10 - Orchestrated Liverpool’s play in the centre of the park and picked out some defence-splitting balls. Unfortunate to deflect the ball into Jovetic’s path for City’s opener.

Joe Allen 6/10 - A bit wasteful at times with his distribution. Showed full commitment throughout but often lacked a solid end product.

Philippe Coutinho 7/10 - Found himself somewhat oppressed by Fernando in the first half. Grew into the game after the break and looked a real threat. Burst in on goal alone in the 55th minute only to be denied by a super save from Hart.

Daniel Sturridge 6.5/10 - Had a few half chances and showed again that he’s capable of hold up play if need be. Credited with the assist on Henderson’s strike.

Rickie Lambert 6/10 - With the first real chance of the game, headed directly into Caballero’s chest from point blank range. Relatively starved for service afterwards.

Simon Mignolet (46’ for Jones) 6.5/10 - Perhaps unlucky to concede twice under unfortunate circumstances. Saved two penalties to held guide Liverpool to victory in the shootout.

Jack Robinson (46’ for Jose Enrique) 6/10 - Struggled to contend with the pace of Navas and was beaten by the Spaniard in the build-up to City’s opener. Recovered by supplying an excellent ball for Lucas Leiva to knock down for Sterling’s late equaliser.

Glen Johnson (46’ for Kelly) 6/10 - Got forward well but left space in behind for City to counter. A solid, if unspectacular showing.

Raheem Sterling (46’ for Lambert) 7.5/10 - Dynamic after coming on for the second half. Gave life to the Liverpool attack after a dour first half and netted a lovely goal to level the scores five minutes from full time.

Emre Can (65’ for Allen) 6.5/10 - Made some intelligent runs and provided a platform for Liverpool to fight back after going 2-1 down.

Lucas Leiva (76’ for Gerrard) 7/10 - Did ever so well to set up Sterling’s goal. Scored the winning penalty in the decisive shootout.

Mamadou Sakho (76’ for Coates) 6.5/10 - Played a mistake free quarter-hour at the back in his first pre-season action.
