Southampton tipped to move again for Manchester United's Javier Hernandez

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is claimed to be considering another attempt to bring Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez to the South Coast.

While Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez was reported to have rejected a move to Southampton earlier this summer, that has not stopped Ronald Koeman from renewing interest in the out-of-favour striker.

According to, the Saints boss is lining up a new £15 million bid, after failing to land the Mexican international as part of the deal which saw left-back Luke Shaw head to Old Trafford for around £30 million.

In addition to Shaw, Southampton have seen four other first-teamers leave the club this summer, with Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren all departing for Liverpool for a combined £48 million, and Calum Chambers sealing a £16 million move to Arsenal earlier his week.

Furthermore, midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin is said to have handed in a transfer request, after expressing his displeasure at the summer exodus, with former manager Mauricio Pochettino keen to have the Frenchman join him at Tottenham Hotspur, in a potential deal which could see the team’s transfer income soar above the £100 million mark.

With the sole additions to the squad thus far being Eredivisie pair Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle, as well as Chelsea loanee Ryan Bertrand, more signings are desperately needed before the start of the campaign, as the club bid to match last season’s impressive eight-place Premier League finish.

Having shown a great deal of promise in his first three seasons at United, Hernandez endured a frustrating 2013-14, making six starts in 24 league games, with just the four goals to show for his efforts, while being dropped from Mexico’s starting lineup for the World Cup.

Confined to the bench under David Moyes, the 26-year-old is uncertain whether he’ll feature in new boss Louis van Gaal’s plans and, with speculation surrounding his future rampant in recent weeks, it seems as though a move during this transfer window could well be on the cards.

However, whether that will be to the South Coast remains up in the air, with European giants Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan also reported to be courting his signature, the former Guadalajara prospect even going as far as to state that he was pleased to hear of the latter’s interest.

It remains to be seen whether Hernandez can rediscover the form he demonstrated under Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure at United but opportunities would be plentiful at Southampton, and Koeman seems to believe he can re-ignite the once-lethal marksman’s career.
