Liverpool have landed an early blow over Premier League rivals Manchester City following a penalty shoot-out win against the current domestic champions in a pre-season friendly.
Liverpool and Manchester City were locked at 2-2 before the spot kicks with City twice seeing a lead slip away thanks to equalising goals from Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling.
While the literal significance of the result is not great, it’s a psychological blow in favour of Liverpool who will be determined to repeat the impact they had on English football last season.
Here are five of the best images from the game.
Jordan Henderson is one of Liverpool’s most versatile and most popular players. It will be interesting to see where he settles in the Reds’ team this season but it’s encouraging that he’s finding the back of the net.
Raheem Sterling doesn’t seem to have lost any of his form from last season and the World Cup, clearly delighted when he get the better of England teammate Joe Hart.
Liverpool worked hard to get back into the game after falling behind twice so it wasn’t a surprise when a large collection of players celebrated with Raheem Sterling following his equaliser.
Brendan Rodgers will be pleased with Emre Can’s performance during the game, especially as he stepped up to take a spot kick under pressure. Two Liverpool players missed penalties but he wasn’t one of them.
Liverpool were well supported during the game and their players paid tribute to that support after the drama of the shoot out victory was over.
