Everton fans are still celebrating last night's news that striker Romelu Lukaku is staying on Merseyside for good. The 21-year-old spend last season on loan at Goodison Park from Chelsea, and the Toffees completed a stunning £28m swoop to sign the Belgian permanently. Manager Roberto Martinez made Lukaku his third signing of the summer, and said that he will still have to work hard to get in to the Everton side.
"Rom is vitally important but his transfer fee will not count for anything in terms of him developing and having an important role in the side," said the Spaniard. "This dressing room has got a special feeling and it is not about how much you pay for players to come in, it is about selecting the players to be in there.
"We really needed Rom at the club and that is where the chairman (Bill Kenwright) and the board have been exceptional and I do think it is a key moment at our club. I am looking at that number nine position - and I am probably biased - but he is potentially the best choice in world football," added the former Wigan boss.
The former Anderlecht star hit 15 goals in 31 appearances for Everton last season, and says that he made his mind up some time ago - he wanted to leave Chelsea for a permanent stay at Goodison Park.
"I spoke with my agent and then from that moment on I left it up to him as I was on holiday," said Lukaku. "I made my decision and then didn't speak too much about it."
Elsewhere in the transfer market, Everton are still looking to improve their squad, and a new name linked with the club is Mexican winger Andres Guardado. The Valencia star, 27, spent the second half of last season in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen, and his future at the Mestalla looks bleak - leading to reports in Mexico that Everton are lining up a swoop.
