Borussia Dortmund fans tip United target Hummels to become next captain

Mats Hummels 2 Germany

Manchester United target Mats Hummels is a choice to be Borussia Dortmund's next skipper after Seb Kehl gave up the role.

Seb Kehl has announced that he’s stepping down as Borussia Dortmund captain for the coming season, which leaves Jurgen Klopp with a big decision over who to appoint as his next skipper.

Kehl previously revealed that this season will be his last with BVB and his decision to vacate the captaincy appears to be a tactic to allow a new leader to bed himself in, with Kehl to use as a reference point over the next 12 months.

Reports suggest there are two immediate candidates for the job; goalkeeper and vice-captain Roman Weidenfeller and reported Manchester United transfer target Mats Hummels.

Hummels plays at the heart of Dortmund’s back four and is the favourite in the eyes of many despite the fact Weidenfeller was Kehl’s deputy when he held the captaincy.

It would obviously dent the chances of any side looking to sign Hummels of he was named as BVB’s captain because it would be an indication of Dortmund’s long term thinking.

However, that’s not to detract from the qualities Hummels has which make him a good selection as captain rather than the decision being a tactic from Klopp to stop the German defender from leaving.

Hummels is fresh off the back of a World Cup win with Germany, which gives him confidence and momentum heading into the new season.

He plays in a position where he can not only organise BVB’s back four but also structure the rest of the team and give his opinion and tactical deficiencies he sees happening during a match.

Manchester United are still well within their rights to try and sign him whether that’s this summer or next, but if he’s wearing the captain’s armband when they next take a look at doing a deal, it’s going to be much more difficult for them to pull something off.

Here are some examples of fans calling for Hummels to be named as Dortmund’s next skipper.
