Atletico's reported pursuit of Kagawa could be good news for Arsenal

Reports are surfacing that Atletico Madrid could be set to swoop for Shinji Kagawa and that is good news for Arsenal fans

Manchester United’s Shinji Kagawa has emerged as a potential target for Atletico Madrid, according to reports.

Kagawa has failed to live up expectations at Old Trafford since moving from Borussia Dortmund in 2012 and it seems that his time at the club could be up.

Louis van Gaal is apparently willing to listen to offers and the La Liga champions have lined him up a potential player who could offer something to their squad.

If the Japanese international was to join it would surely signal the end of their chase for another reported transfer target in Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla.

The diminutive attacking midfielder has been linked with a move away from the Emirates all summer and it seemed as if Atletico was his most likely destination, however, he would likely not be needed if they were to land Kagawa.

United have been trying to use the 25-year-old as a makeweight in a deal to bring Dortmund’s Mats Hummels to the club for much of the summer so far, but the German outfit’s reluctance to allow their star centre back to go has meant that Van Gaal may have to look at simply cashing in on Kagawa.

He was brought to Old Trafford and expected to become the creative fulcrum of the side after establishing himself as one of the most exciting players in the world at Dortmund.

However, he has now slipped behind Juan Mata in his favoured position of central attacking midfield at United and when he has appeared on the pitch is has often been on a wing.

He simply hasn’t looked comfortable there and with Van Gaal seemingly set to utilise a 3-4-1-2 formation for the upcoming season it looks like his opportunities for first team football are set to be slim once again.

United are likely to be able to recoup most of the £17 million outlay that they spent on Kagawa, but there will always be a disappointment that someone of his talent never truly shone at the club if he does depart for La Liga.
