With the 2014-15 Premier League season just around the corner, we look at the best 11 footballers in the English top flight at the moment, including Arsenal and Chelsea stars but without a single Manchester United or Liverpool player...

A new month, a new season. The world’s most popular domestic football league kicks off in just over two weeks’ time, and we now look at the top 11 players in the Premier League.

Yours truly has considered players who are officially in the squads of the 20 teams in the English top flight at the time of writing. For example, players like Arturo Vidal and Mats Hummels, who have been persistently linked with moves to Manchester United, have not been included.

Moreover, this writer has included players not based just on current form but on overall quality and potential. For example, Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil, who had a rather mixed season in 2013-14, is part of the team because there can be no doubt on his world-class status and what he achieved during his three years at Real Madrid prior to his move to the Gunners last summer.

New Arsenal signing Alexis Sanchez is also in the Premier League XI even though he has yet to feature in the English top flight and there is no guarantee that he will succeed.

However, the fact that the Chile international forward has proved his class and calibre time and time again during his tenure at Udinese and Barcelona plays in his favour.

Midfielder Cesc Fabregas and left-back Filipe Luis are also in the team, having joined Chelsea from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for £27 million and £16m respectively earlier this summer.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has struggled with injuries in the past two seasons, but he has been included because of his undisputed quality and world-class status.

Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge has been in superb form over the past 18 or so months, but the England international is not yet at the same level as Aguero and thus misses out.

Given that the Premier League is very competitive with a plethora of world-class players, many star names had to be left out such as Diego Costa, Samir Nasri, David de Gea, Juan Mata and Petr Cech.

Below is yours truly’s Premier League XI ahead of the 2014-15 campaign.
