A new month, a new season. One of the world’s most popular domestic football leagues kicks off in just over three weeks’ time, and we now look at the top 11 players in La Liga.
Yours truly has considered players who are officially still in the squads of the 20 teams in the Spanish top flight at the time of writing. For example, Angel di Maria, who is reported to be on the radars of both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, is part of the team.
Moreover, this writer has included players not just based on current form but on overall quality and potential. For example, Marc-Andre ter Stegen joined Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach only in May, but the 22-year-old Germany international has already established himself as one of the finest young goalkeepers in Europe.
Claudio Bravo, who made the move from Real Sociedad to Barcelona just weeks ago, and Keylor Navas, who is currently on the books of Levante, miss out on the goalkeeper’s spot to Ter Stegen, who at 22 had loads of potential and could well go on to make himself the best in his position in the next few years.
New Barcelona signing Luis Suarez also makes La Liga XI despite having joined the Blaugrana from Liverpool earlier this month - although the Uruguay international forward is suspended until the end of October.
Perhaps one could point out that Neymar and Gareth Bale would be more deserving of his place up front as they are regulars in the Spanish top flight, but the 27-year-old is one of the top three strikers in the world at the moment and is an all-round and more accomplished player.
Given that La Liga is very competitive with a plethora of world-class players, many star names had to be left out. Real Madrid duo Bale and Luka Modric, Barcelona right-back Daniel Alves and Atletico Madrid defender Miranda all had to be omitted.
Below is yours truly’s La Liga XI ahead of the 2014-15 campaign.
2014/15 La Liga XI

Daniel Carvajal - Sergio Ramos – Diego Godin – Jordi Alba
