The most significant factor for Chelsea to capture Joao Miranda?

The representative of Atletico Madrid defender has a working relationship with Jose Mourinho and the Blues.

According to earlier reports, Chelsea placed a bid of £20 million for Joao Miranda - a fee that was £5 million short of a clause in the player's contract that would allegedly trigger a release from his Atletico Madrid deal.

If accepted, one man who could be key to personal negotiations is not just Blues boss Jose Mourinho, owner Roman Abramovich or Atleti manager Diego Simeone, but Jorge Mendes, the super-agent to Miranda and a man who has already overseen Diego Costa and Filipe Luis's transfer to West London.

Mendes - a past recipient of the 'Best agent' prize at the Globe Soccer Awards - has an incredible working relationship with Mourinho having linked up with the coach at Porto over a decade ago.

Mendes even negotiated the deal with Abramovich that took Mourinho to Stamford Bridge for the first time, before brokering deals for Thiago, Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira.

Should Chelsea agree a fee with Atletico, then it is logical to presume that successful personal negotiations will be a foregone conclusion.

In a previous story, Miranda was compared favourably to Chelsea stalwart John Terry and former Manchester United mainstay Nemanja Vidic in this statistical comparison.
