Spanish paper suggests Daniel Agger isn't a priority for Brendan Rodgers

Spanish newspaper Sport has suggested Daniel Agger is no longer a priority for Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool.

Catalan newspaper Sport has suggested Liverpool’s recent deal for Dejan Lovren means Barcelona can sign centre-back Daniel Agger.

Barca seem keen to add further defensive strength to their squad with Agger thought to be one of their main targets, following the acquisition of Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia.

Liverpool have knocked back a bid from Barca for the Danish international in the past, but Sport believes that Lovren’s presence at Anfield can finally help them get their man.

“The signing of Croatian Dejan Lovren, hypothetically facilitates Agger’s exit to Barcelona. The Dane is no longer a priority for Brendan Rodgers, who prefers Skrtel and Sakho,” reports Sport.

Something has to give because Liverpool now have five quality defenders in the form of Agger, Lovren, Skrtel, Sakho and Kolo Toure.

One of them will make way because there’s going to be a very unhappy player left in Liverpool’s ranks who is not seeing a great deal of football.

The choice most fans would make in terms of an exit is Toure, who is arguably less impressive on paper than his four colleagues.

However, Rodgers has used Toure on the pre-season tour of the USA which suggests he believes the experienced defender still has a role to play for the club.

Even if Toure was axed, there is still going to be an unhappy player because someone of Agger’s quality will not be content with sitting on the bench for the majority of the season.

It would be a shame if Lovren’s arrival forced the Reds into doing business with Barca for Agger because he’s a popular player with Liverpool fans and clearly loves the club.

However, he’s a top quality player who needs to be playing first team football regularly and if Barca make the right offer, Rodgers can’t be blamed for commissioning the club to accept it.
