Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar is reportedly a target for Italian side Lazio, with claims surfacing that the Serie A side want to partner him with his Dutch international colleague Stefan de Vrij.
De Vrij is said to be nearing a move from Feyenoord to Lazio, having previously been linked with Manchester United. And now Inside Futbol has picked up on claims from Italy that Lazio also want the Villa man.
Vlaar enjoyed an outstanding World Cup for the Netherlands, and those performances have seen his name regularly thrown into the gossip columns this summer.
The centre-back recently fuelled speculation when he revealed that he would be holding talks with his agent in due course.
Speaking to Dutch football magazine Helden in an interview later published by Sky Sports, Vlaar said, “I still have one year left and I understand absolutely Villa don’t want to let me go.
“(In) the previous weeks I haven’t even thought about a possible transfer. The only thing I did was enjoying my holiday and didn’t even think about football.
“Soon I will meet my agent and discuss the various options.”
And it appears one of those could be a switch to Italy, with Lazio allegedly keen on replicating the partnership that proved so successful for the Netherlands earlier this summer.
Villa will be desperate to keep the player at the club. But with just a year left on his current contract, and at the age of 29, Vlaar may have some big decisions to make if the offers really do arrive in due course.
