Jan Vertonghen has told a Belgian broadcaster that he wants to stay at Tottenham Hotspur.

Several reports have music for the ears of Tottenham Hotspur fans today with Jan Vertonghen set to snub a move to Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Belgian had been suggested as a defensive reinforcements for Luis Enrique’s team but reports have reiterated that Vertonghen is likely to be offered a new long term deal to stay at Spurs.

He’s arguably Mauricio Pochettino’s most important defender heading into the new Premier League campaign.

He has captaincy experience, which is important considering Michael Dawson could leave and move to Hull City, which will leave a leadership hole in the back four.

He’s also a very versatile player and while he doesn’t like playing at left-back, he provides cover in that position and enables Pochettino to play a more attacking style.

Someone like Ben Davies can be given more of a licence to get up the left hand side of the pitch with Vertonghen able to drift to the left and cover when the full-back gets caught up the pitch and teams counter attack Spurs.

It’s also a very big sign of what Pochettino is capable of in terms of man management and getting his messages across to senior and important players at the club.

Looking in from the outside, it would seemingly be a no brainer to join Barcelona, but Pochettino appears to have backed up a personal phone call he made to Vertonghen to address any issues the defender has over his own role or the way Tottenham are progressing towards the new campaign.

With deals for Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez from Southampton and Miguel Lopes from Sporting Lisbon lined up, it’s definitely an exciting time to be a Spurs fan and the side benefits from keeping one of their best players.

Here’s what Spurs fans have had to say about Vertonghen’s apparent commitment on Twitter.
